چکیده

Across four experimental studies, individuals who were depleted of their self-regulatory resources by an initial act of self-control were more likely to ‘‘impulsively cheat’’ than individuals whose self-regulatory resources were intact. Our results demonstrate that individuals depleted of self-control resources were more likely to behave dishonestly (Study 1). Depletion reduced people’s moral awareness when they faced the opportunity to cheat, which, in turn, was responsible for heightened cheating (Study 2). Individuals high in moral identity, however, did not show elevated levels of cheating when they were depleted (Study 3), supporting our hypothesis that self-control depletion increases cheating when it robs people of the executive resources necessary to identify an act as immoral or unethical. Our results also show that resisting unethical behavior both requires and depletes self-control resources (Study 4). Taken together, our findings help to explain how otherwise ethical individuals predictably engage in unethical

Ego-depletion 1 Ego-depletion: Theory and Evidence

Self-control all too often fails. Despite people‟s best intentions and considerable negative outcomes, people often find themselves at the losing end of resisting temptation, combating urges, and changing their behavior. One reason for these failures may be that exerting selfcontrol depletes a limited resource (ego-depletion) that is necessary for the success of selfcontrol. Hence, after exerti...

Salience network dynamics underlying successful resistance of temptation

Self-control and the ability to resist temptation are critical for successful completion of long-term goals. Contemporary models in cognitive neuroscience emphasize the primary role of prefrontal cognitive control networks in aligning behavior with such goals. Here, we use gaze pattern analysis and dynamic functional connectivity fMRI data to explore how individual differences in the ability to...

Running head: DEPLETION IN AN INTEGRATIVE THEORY OF SELF-CONTROL 1 How Depletion Operates in an Integrative Theory of Self-Control

This chapter explains how depletion operates within the conceptual framework of integrative self-control theory (SCT; Kotabe & Hofmann, 2015). SCT is a broad and integrative model of self-control which comprises seven components or “nodes”: desire, higher-order goal, desiregoal conflict, control motivation, control capacity, control effort, and enactment constraints. The interplay of these comp...

Resisting the power of temptations: the right prefrontal cortex and self-control.

Imagine you are overweight and you spot your favorite pastry in the storefront of a bakery. How do you manage to resist this temptation? Or to give other examples, how do you manage to restrain yourself from overspending or succumbing to sexual temptations? The present article summarizes two recent studies stressing the fundamental importance of inhibition in the process of decision making. Bas...

How to resist temptation: the effects of external control versus autonomy support on self-regulatory dynamics.

The purpose of the present study (N=80 undergraduate students) was to examine two issues: first, does external control lead to an increase in resistance to temptation more than the use of autonomy support? Second, what are the long-term effects of these types of educational style? Based on the Personality Systems Interaction (PSI) theory, external control was expected to increase resistance to ...
